Tulane Green Wave @ Houston Cougars
These AAC foes square off tonight at TDECU Stadium in what I’m projecting to be a high scoring affair. The Cougars come into this matchup 2-2, after a thrilling double overtime loss to Texas Tech on the road week 2, followed by a far less competitive loss to Kansas at home the following week. Kansas (I’m sure to the shock of everyone who has bet on college football over the last decade) has looked like a different team thus far in 2022, with wins over West Virginia and Duke, en route to their first 4-0 start since 2009, so that loss doesn’t look quite as bad for Houston as it would have in practically any other season since Slumdog Millionaire won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
Tulane is coming off a close loss at home to Southern Miss last week, after an impressive win on the road against Kansas State in week 3. I feel as though that week 3 upset, combined with Houston’s loss to Kansas has contributed to keeping this line down. The Cougars routed the Green Wave 40-22 at Yulman Stadium last fall, and I like their chances for another win tonight in what should be a much closer affair, playing in front of their rabid fans on a Friday Night.
Houston ML (-150) 1 unit
Over 54.5 points (-110) .5 unit (I would wait until closer to kickoff to see if you can grab this line at 54, or recommend buying a point)
San Diego State @ Boise State
After Boise State fired their offensive coordinator this week after an embarrassing loss to UTEP on the road in week 4, and starting quarterback Hank Bachmeier entered the transfer portal, all signs point to an easy cover for San Diego State tonight. The fact this line hasn’t moved much as a result gives me pause, though. Former backup quarterback Taylen Green will get the start tonight, and is a much bigger threat with his legs than the aforementioned Bachmeier, which I think will be a key factor in tonight’s game.
Both of these teams have above average defenses, but I think the Broncos will sell out to stop the run, forcing Aztecs quarterback Braxton Burmiester to beat them with his arm, which he hasn’t shown the ability to do in any games so far this season. Playing in front of their home crowd in a nationally televised game makes the difference in this one.
Boise State -6.5 (110) 1 unit
Washington Huskies @ UCLA Bruins (Odds provided by DraftKings)
Spread: Washington -3 (-105) | UCLA +3 (-115)
Moneyline: Washington -145 | UCLA +125
Total: Over 65.5 (-110) | Under 65.5 (-110)
In what should be the most exciting game of the night (and unfortunately one of the latest for those of us in the eastern time zone), we get an undefeated matchup between the Huskies and the Bruins. Washington has gotten off to a hot start in 2022, with an impressive win over Michigan State at home in week 3, followed by a beatdown of Stanford last week. Quarterback Michael Penix Jr, who transferred to Washington after injuries put a damper on what was an impressive start to his career at Indiana, has been on fire of late, leading the Huskies to the #1 passing attack in the nation. This is their first road test of the season, though, and you know my feelings when it comes to home dogs in Friday night games…
UCLA hasn’t played nearly as strong of a schedule as Washington has so far this season, but they did what they were supposed to last week on the road against Colorado, dismantling an inferior team. I don’t feel as though UCLA has quite as strong of a home field advantage as most teams would in this one, and Washington has been stout against the run, only giving up 2.6 ypc, so I’m inclined to stay away from the spread here, and will likely live bet it once I get a better feel for the game.
