Mavericks at Pelicans

The season has started in rather eventful fashion for both clubs. The Mavericks blew a 20+ point lead against the Suns but bounced back against the Grizzlies to earn a 1-1 record. Luka is playing at an MVP level and the Christian Wood acquisition looks to be paying dividends already. The Pelicans are a very dangerous team this season, they are 2-1 and look incredible. Other than a bit of a fluky game against the Jazz this team has everything you’d want and more. The only question mark for this team is health, with Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram a little banged up to start the year. Neither player is expected to miss significant time and it’s so early in the season this team shouldn’t be worried.

Assuming Zion plays in this game I think the Pelicans at home are the play here, the Mavericks have the better player but the Pelicans have the better roster. This Pelicans team is kind of a bad matchup for the Mavericks in my opinion. The are physically imposing and should be able to dominate down low against a Mavericks team that doesn’t have a lot of size or a true rim protector right now. I expect Herb Jones to do a good job guarding Luka and Jonas Valanciunas patrolling the paint should make it difficult for him to get to the rim.

Pick: Pelicans +4.5

Warriors at Suns

The Warriors travel to Phoenix to in their first road game of the season and take on a Suns team that is playing good basketball yet again. Both Golden State and Phoenix enter this game 2-1. The Warriors lone loss being to Denver by the score of 128-123 and the Suns lone loss being in overtime to Portland with a score of 113-111. Both teams have gotten back on track with wins and seem to be at full strength in what could be a Western Conference Finals preview. Granted you could say that about a lot of matchups in the west, the point is these are two very high-quality teams both of whom should have championship aspirations.

Golden State has shown how lethal they can be on offense, but I expect the Suns to slow them down. The Warriors enter this game ranking first in Pace (110.33), Phoenix is on the other end of the spectrum ranking 27th in Pace (96.81). The Suns are going to slow this game down significantly which will play right into their hands if they want to win this game. The Warriors defense also seems to be shaky right now, they gave up 109 to the woeful Lakers, 125 to the Kings, and 128 to the Nuggets. I expect the Suns to keep this game slow and hold the Warriors offense in check while taking advantage of their shaky defense.
