Week 8 Recap:

I broke my golden rule last week, picking Tulsa to cover on the road against Temple, and ended up with second degree burns. Davis Brin was atrocious, starting off the Golden Hurricane’s first drive with a pick six, and the Owls did just enough to hang around and get the cover. Fortunately the Blazers and Hilltoppers game went as expected, with UAB running back DeWayne McBride controlling the game on the ground with 197 rushing yards, keeping Western Kentucky’s offense off the field enough for an easy cover on the under.

East Carolina Pirates @ BYU Cougars (Odds provided by DraftKings)

Spread: BYU -3.5  (-105) | East Carolina +3.5 (-115)

Moneyline: BYU -155 | East Carolina +135

Total: Over 63.5 (-110) | Under 63.5 (-110)

Game Preview:

This is a matchup of two potent offenses, with both teams averaging over 400 yards per game. The Pirates are coming into this game off of an impressive home win against UCF, after a thrilling four overtime win against Memphis the previous week, while BYU will look to end their 3 game skid. Everything screams to bet the over, which is why I’m going to stay away from that and wait to live bet it after I get a better feel for how both teams are moving the ball. BYU has played a much tougher schedule, and even reached as high as #12 in the rankings after an impressive double overtime win week 2 against Baylor, before getting blown out at Oregon the following week. I think the Cougars get back on track tonight, but I’m weary of the hook now that the lines moved to 3.5, so I’m going to grab the money line to be safe.

Louisiana Tech Bulldogs  @ FIU Golden Panthers (Odds provided by DraftKings)

Spread: Louisiana Tech -6 (-110) | FIU +6 (-110)

Moneyline: Louisiana Tech -225 | FIU +190

Total: Over 57 (-105) | Under 57 (-115)

Game Preview:

I took FIU as one of my Friday night home dogs against UTSA two weeks ago, and they rewarded me. I wrote at the time “FIU is not a good football team, but they’re better than they’ve been in the past, already winning multiple games in a season for the first time since 2019. These kids play hard for first year head coach Mike Maclntyre, and I smell a backdoor cover here.” FIU ended up covering the 33 point spread comfortably, and then actually looked impressive last week, cruising past a terrible Charlotte team 34-15 on the road. If this line gets to 7, I will jump on the Golden Panthers, but I’m not as comfortable picking them at this number, so I’m leaning towards the over as the safest bet in this one.
